Post-MBA / Masters Application Basics

- Once the MBA or Masters programme comes to a close entrance to the job market becomes an increasingly pressing issue. This transitional period might present a challenge in present times, due to the difficult employment market and might give rise to a fair share of frustration and disappointment.

In such a climate it is particularly important to offer a state-of-the-art application and be well informed about the job in question.

Job Application Tips

Prior to any application it is important to check out and research the job and the company carefully. For maximum job satisfaction it is important to get as much of an impression of the position beforehand as possible and furthermore be able to identify with the company and its products. Read job advertisements carefully in order to find out exactly what employers might expect from their employees and how you can best present your strengths. The job offer should match your skills, abilities and interests. Note down possible questions and issues to clarify.

  • Cover Letter

The cover letter is the first impression your potential new employer will have of you. Just like all other application documents it needs to be correct and written with care, but should also be interesting and easy to read. Highlight personal and professional achievements and demonstrate your motivations and interests for why you are applying for this specific job. If salary expectations are required for the cover letter, be sure to include it toward the end of the letter. To calculate your salary expectations accurately make sure you consider benefit payments such as Christmas or other bonuses, insurances, medical cover and other benefits. Find out as much information as you can about current salaries for similar positions in order to ascertain a measured and fair salary expectation. On average this may well be between 10 and 15% above your current salary.
  • CV

Your CV is your best chance to highlight your strengths, your experience and your achievements. This document showcases you as an employee, and it is important that it is correct and complete. Undue embellishments might make a strong first impression but will come to light as an exaggeration sooner or later. There are a range of different types of resumes: table format, comprehensive, short form and functional resumes. Which type you use is up to you, but make sure it is clear to read and thoroughly proof read. It is important to tailor your CV to the position and company you are applying for but without changing essential information. If you include a photograph, make sure it looks natural and don’t hesitate to consult friends or acquaintances in the selection of the right photograph.
  • Job application forms

Employers often use a job application form to shortlist those candidates that meet the requirements for the position most closely.  It is important to analyze the given requirements carefully and match your own experience to the required skill-set and expectations.  Highlight your strengths relevant to the position and explain briefly how your experience matches the requirements. It is also always helpful to emphasise a proactive approach and self-motivating capacities in relevant situations.
Never be too vague in answering a section on the application form or leave any questions unanswered. The HR manager will notice any inconsistencies and they are generally well versed in spotting insincerities in an applicant’s answers.  Additionally, always keep a copy of the job application form for your files so that you can refresh you memory if you get invited to attend a job interview.

Job Interviews

If a prospective employer invites you to an interview you will already have come far in the application process. Not many applicants make it to this stage! Try an set the interview for a date that leaves you sufficient time to prepare for the interview and allows you to arrive stress-free and in time for the appointment. Dress comfortably without looking too casual. Don’t overdo it with jewellery or make up. Often overlooked but very important: clean shoes make for an overall good and smart impression.

Interviews are subject to varied dynamics and it is difficult to fully prepare for what is to unfold during the interview. That’s why it is important that you are in full control of those aspects that you can control. Make sure you know your own resume, you are aware of your weaknesses and strengths, you have sufficient information about the company and position in question and the products offered. It is important to make a good impression during the interview. Self-confidence and assuredness, without coming across as arrogant, are winning strategies in an interview. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the position or the company. Try and enjoy the interview so that it feels less like and exam but rather an opportunity to get to know one another.
