22.10.2009 New World University Rankings Published

The Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings have been published earlier this month. While the stronghold of UK and US universities remains largely unchallenged in the upper places of the rankings, institutions in a broader range of countries, particularly Asian countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Malaysia begin to make their mark in the rankings.
While Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, University College London and Imperial College London occupy the top five spots in the rankings, it is evident that a surge by Asian institutions has taken place. As the Times Higher Education reports online, Japan counts 11 universities in the top 200, Hong Kong has five institutions in the top 200 rankings and South Korea can claim four universities among the top 200 places.
The rankings are compiled annually as a joint effort by the Times Higher Education and QS, and are based on a mixture of quantitative indicators and informed opinion. For full details on the 2009 rankings, background information, methodology as well as a ranking breakdown by subject field, see the Times Higher Education website at http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk.
